Run as fast as you can AWAY from this 'helpful' product

Mimi's note: Quite frankly, ANYTHING, that hurts one of my animals I DON'T consider to be 'good' or helpful or a training aid. I've seen this 'thing' on teevee for a while now and was wondering what in the world it did to stop the barking since it wasn't a collar. The second I read that some dogs 'yelp' or refuse to come back into a room - well, I can tell you this - those folks won't get a dime of my money and not a dime of my friends' money, if I can help it. To be honest, I can't think of one friend who would buy anything that would hurt their animals.

PeoplePets.com  My Top 5 most annoying sounds: 1) car horns, 2) jackhammers, 3) the ShamWow! guy, 4) any song by Katy Perry and, much as I hate to admit it, 5) the ear-splitting clamor of my five little dogs barking. One of them woofing solo is no big deal, but when they start yapping all at once, pushing each other to shrill new heights—instant headache.

Which is why I was eager to try BarkOff, a nifty new device designed to "stop your dog's annoying barking anytime, anywhere." Basically, it's a small battery-powered stick that emits ultrasonic sound waves—which, for you nerds out there, are sounds with a frequency greater than 20 kilohertz and thus audible to dogs, cats, bats and dolphins but not to your average human. You just switch it on and either carry it around or leave it in the room where your dogs hang out, and when they start barking it triggers the sounds waves that stop them after a mere yelp or two.

So, did it work? My five little dogs live in a city apartment where all sorts of noises set them off, so I was skeptical this thing-a-majig could quickly silence them all. But it did! After just a couple of barks they looked confused and clammed up, just like that.

I did notice that my oldest critter—Manley, the Maltese—sometimes kept barking. Turns out BarkOff isn’t quite as effective on older dogs with hearing problems. But that was okay—without the rest of the gang yammering along with him, Manley soon gave up and stopped howling.

I also noticed that two of my pups—Nino the Shih Tzu and SheShe the Chihuahua— reacted to the sound waves by slinking off and cowering in a corner. Nino, in particular, refused to go back into the living room, where I put the BarkOff, for a couple of hours. Ultrasonic sound waves are absolutely safe for animals, and certainly much more humane than electric shock collars and other anti-barking devices. Still, it bothered me to see my guys act so terrified in their own home.

So, for me, it's a tradeoff. BarkOff is super-effective and, at just $10, a super deal. I take it with me when I walk the dogs and it works great outdoors, and I switch it on indoors whenever it's important to keep my guys quiet. But other times, I let them bark. We all have to get it out of our systems once in a while, don't we?

Now, can someone please locate the frequency that will shut up the ShamWow! guy?

Mom is so happy we are not barkers - we don't have to deal with products like that - except for the noisy neighbor pups. We do a lot of wooing but it is almost always from inside when we are trying to tell the humans something.

I understand how you feel and agree. My theory is, dogs bark and that's a fact, but I have chosen to live with dogs inside so that's just part of it. We have six so when one is excited they all are. I would much rather hush the Sham-Wow guy!!

That's disgusting. I really dislike when these products take away from what it means to actually TRAIN A DOG! A barky dog will always be a barky dog, but perhaps walks, mental stimulation, a "quiet" command, etc. can help. I can't believe this person is okay with their animals looking terrified in their own home. Very sad.

Hey there Mimi...
I agree with you...rather deal with the problem properly than simply silence them! There are those terrible people that go so far as to 'de-bark- their animals. I think that is criminal!

Since we are the Barkalot Boyz, you can be sure our mom is always looking at products that claim to help the situation. But, like you, she refuses to do anything that will hurt us -- so she uses the old "sit" (our butts to the ground) "look!" (her finger on her eye) "quiet!" (her finger on her mouth) "treat for quiet boyz" (yum)routine. That's fine except for our 6:30 am ritual barking when our neighbor's dogs go for their walk and our peeps are still asleep. So they've gotten used to the fact of having two reliable if somewhat furry alarm clocks!!!

Wirey love and thanks for the product review!

I am a barker but Samantha is not. She will only bark if she thought she heard an intruder. I bark at all doggies and sometimes humans. Mom used to put the barking collar on me but she just couldn't stand my yelping/crying so she doens't put it on me anymore. She said it pains her to hear me yelp.
We hate it when people de-barked doggies. It's so cruel.

That doesn't sound like a very good product. Tagpi and I don't bark much, but I do have a very loud bark, which I let loose when I see someone hanging around our property. Mom has taught me a "quiet" command, which she finds very useful. Mom does believe in correcting behaviors she doesn't feel are appropriate, but this product sounds much too severe for most dogs that only need a gentle push in the right direction. There are much better ways to train a dog how you hoomans expect it to behave.

When mom has had enough of our barking we get sprayed with water from our mini spray bottle! It's getting to be that we understand the word "bottle" and we stop because we know what's coming!

There are some barky dogs in our neighborhood that go crazy every time we walk by. I wish someone would work with them!

It sure sounds like it's hurting those little dogs. I'm glad I'm not a barker. My new little brother barks more than I do, but only in the normal range. Not where the neighbors start making threats or anything. I guess sometimes people get desperate when they have a real problem. I don't know. Most dogs bark. It's just natural.

We're trying to deal with the barking issue here now. It's never been an issue with the Greyhounds, but Morgan goes a bit crazy when other dogs or people walk past our house. I can appreciate that some people have to curb the problem with a lot more emphasis than others, like people who live in apartments, but it probably wouldn't be for me.

We haven't heard of that horrible nasty thing. That's just so bad that we can't come up with words to say but we would never buy it. Holly barks and the all of the dogs around here bark sometimes and that's what they are meant to do. Lots of love, Debbie and Holly

We count ourselves among the lucky - no chronic barkers here. But I've heard a lot about this lately - looks like it's going to be a hit.
